In the Season 13 Finale of Supernatural, Dean underwent a transformation of sorts. It wasn’t into a monster or anything like that but he’s changed because of it. The concern now is how he’ll be brought back.
To quickly recap the Season 13 Finale of Supernatural, the final fight with Lucifer took place. It had been a long time coming but it finally happened. The result, however, was quite unexpected. Lucifer met his end like we anticipated and it was by Dean’s hand nonetheless. This would’ve been extremely satisfying to see if it didn’t come with a catch.
The truth is, Dean couldn’t beat Lucifer on his own. He actually agreed to let the Michael from Apocalypse-world possess his body. The transfer gave Dean the boost in power needed to bring an end to Lucifer but in doing so, he let Michael control his body. Dean assumed the deal brokered between them would keep Michael contained but that’s not what happened.
As it turns out, Michael decided to keep Dean’s body for himself. He shut Dean back into the recesses of his own mind and then absconded from the bunker. The final moments of the episode depicted Michael / Dean walking down a busy city street with a glint in his eye. There’s no telling what he has planned but it can’t be good.
Regardless of what’s happened, Sam and Castiel will have to find a solution to the Michael problem. They obviously can’t let Michael run around in a Dean meat-suit, especially when he has goals of world domination. And of course, Sam isn’t going to let his brother be used by a maniacal Archangel.
Will Rowena be the key to saving Dean from Michael?
How they manage to free Dean is up for debate, though it’ll probably come down to a spell. Rowena could cook something up with her legendary book of spells, or perhaps Castiel will know how to separate Dean from Michael without killing him. Or, maybe someone else will come in to save the day. However they do it, the team has a big obstacle ahead of them.
One of the biggest problems with possessions is that the host tends to die when an Angel is exorcised so they’ll have to be extremely careful. They could separate Dean from Michael similar to how Sam was freed from Lucifer but it’s going to take some tinkering.
There is, however, a chance that Dean is destined to stay with Michael until the end. Seeing Dean die alongside Michael wouldn’t be pleasant in the least but that could be where Season 14 is headed. Hopefully, that’s not the case because Supernatural wouldn’t be the same without him.
